Continuum damage mechanics is a quickly developing branch of solid mechanics. Thermo-dynamical bases for it consists in an appropriate coupling between the constitutive equations for the basic material, evolution equations for micrcracks and microvoids growth and accumulation, and heat flux in partly damaged solids. The book provides, in a systematic and concise way, a broad spectrum of existing and current constitutive models for isotropic or anisotropic continuum damage evolution in solids, as well as the constitutive equations for inelastic time-dependent solids in the presence of damage. Particular attention is paid to creep- and creep-like damage in high temparature structural members subject to mechanical and thermal loadings. The effective numerical procedures and computer methods are adopted and developed for classical and non-classical creep damage accumulation, when microcrack orientation change with time, resulting in non-stationary mechanical and thermal fields.

This is a very exciting book. It has an excellent introduction which locates postcolonial theory. The intersection between politics and post-colonial theory is the first such application and as Ashcroft suggests on the back cover it is truly ground breaking. The book traces the issues of identity and politics and highlights the major issues which are of concern to African studies, negritude, decolonisation, the state, civil society , human rights and globalisation. Perhaps the most interesting chapter is the chapter on citizenship. I would highly recomend this book. It is not only useful to undergraduates but will be provocative for the more advanced reader.

About the Author
John Linsley Hood (1925-2004) was head of the electronics research laboratories at British cellophane, for nearly 25 years. He worked on many instrumentation projects including width gauges and moisture meters, and made several inventions which were patented under the Cellophane name. Prior to his work at British Cellophane he worked in the electronics laboratory of the Department of Atomic Energy at Sellafield, Cumbria. He studied at Reading University after serving in the military as a radar mechanic. Linsley Hood published more than 30 technical feature articles in Wireless World magazine and its later incarnation Electronics World. He also contributed to numerous magazines including Electronics Today.

It can be used in combination with neighboring fields to explain almost everything about social life. It can explain everything from stock bubbles to religious cults to individual beliefs and habits. It provides the best explanation I know of for how memes—bits and combinations of cultural information—spread. My theoretical assumptions are different from meme theory's assumptions and I avoid using the term "meme" in order not to confuse people, but anyone with an interest in the subject will probably want to read this book. Edward Bernays co-founded the public relations profession with his knowledge of crowd psychology. He and the influential journalist Walter Lippmann used it when they and the others on the Creel Committee got the United States into World War I. So this isn't hot air but has been practically applied to good effect.

This book is broad in scope, but a few simple ideas serve as unifying themes throughout it, so I don't think it's too ambitious; it's cohesive. In addition to the things mentioned above, I also talk about elite theory—or why we'll never be entirely equal, or independent of authority—along with evolutionary theory, media studies, economics, management theory, military strategy, political philosophy, creativity, mental illness, and the arts, and about the formation of ideas and habits, and about what crowd psychology has to say about modern technologies like social media and search engines. I'm attempting to construct a complete theory of human nature, and I dedicate my last chapter entirely to my plan for that.

I am aware of modern research in the behavioral and social sciences, and talk a bit about it, but many of the authors I discuss wrote their books a century or longer ago. What is newer is not always better; no one, as far as I know, has treated the subjects I talk about as thoroughly and with as much rigor as the classic authors. Among the older authors I cite, along with the two mentioned above, are crowd psychologists Gustave Le Bon, Wilfred Trotter, and Gabriel Tarde, along with the founder of American psychology, William James, and the Italian elitist school of sociology, which includes Robert Michels, Gaetano Mosca, and Vilfredo Pareto. A Book That Exceeded My Expectations

When I started reading this book, I was expecting to find a historical background about crowd psychology covering the writings of the leaders and pioneers of this field. But Noah Halberg exceeded my expectations not only in how thorough was the background he gave but in the manner he has woven these writings in a seamless way through out the book to help achieve the objective of "the uniting of the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities under a single intellectual framework."

I was also expecting that a book about crowd psychology will tap into multiple disciplines mainly in psychology, sociology and political sciences. But yet again Noah Halberg exceeded my expectations by the breadth of disciplines he delves into in his quest to put "a plan for a complete theory of human nature" as he outlined it in chapter 13: Philosophy, linguistics, mythology, fashion, religion, history, theories of war, media, economics and economic bubbles, sociobiology, evolutionary biology, physiology are just some of the disciplines from which xxxxx picked what is relevant or what he made relevant through his powerful insights.

Of particular interest to me was chapter 10: "The Crowd and Modern Technology" in which he expressed his concerns about the impact of the internet and social media on individual liberty. In a world that is "becoming more and more like a big crowd", the boundaries between public and private life is being destroyed. But since "civilization depends completely on free individuals because the crowd is incapable of any but the crudest thoughts" and since "free individuals can only exist when allowed ample privacy" then individual freedom and privacy should be protected to ensure that new ideas (that only originate at the individual level) will continue to emerge and keep uplifting civilization to higher levels.

One more thing in which Noah Halberg exceeded my expectations was the simple reader-friendly language of the book for such a specialized topic. This is why I recommend this book to anyone who would like to retain a minimum level of intellectual privacy and freedom to understand many of the destructive phenomena plaguing our world like riots, faked revolutions, economic bubbles and all kinds of extremism.... and hence avoid falling into such crowd traps. The only warning for the casual reader is that it is not a short book nor a book to be read before going to sleep. It is thought provoking and demands a long attention span.

Sing lessons for ages 4-8? Maybe so, maybe not!

The book is very nice, but in language far above the target audience of 4 to 8 y/o's, such as using the word "naval" rather than "belly button." Using "abdominal muscles" rather than "tummy". Seems more of a book a teacher would use and then reinterpret depending on the child's age. The example photos of poor and good posture are strangely similar with the exception of a flexed knee (poor) and straight legs (good) - and microphone position, which has little to do with anything. I'm much much happier with the cute little snake pictures which are colorful and vibrant.

Lesson one covers a description of "how we sing" including a basic anatomical diagram of the diaphragm, lungs, etc. Then there are small sections on posture, breathing, breath control and discussion of a "melody". A paragraph about "aiming" the voice is interesting. From there, beginning with lesson two is music theory. There is a focus on "sol-fa" and as notes are demonstrated on the "keyboards" the corresponding solfege is also provided. The songs included are less examples for singing technique than examples for sight-reading information provided. For a "singing lesson" book, this book falls far below what is needed to teach singing. There is no attention given to vowel sound production at all. The "singing portion of the book is Lesson 1 only. Rename the book "Learning to Read Music for Beginners" and it would be good. Make the language more age-appropriate at you could keep the age range 4-8. Very good information, but poorly produced and compiled.
