Technical analysis (or, in laymen's terms, simply "charting") is the study of a security's past price and volume movements in the hope of predicting that security's future price movements. Technical analysis exploits the fact that market psychology influences the price and trading patterns of a security and that these trading patterns are repeated time and time again.

While the existence of repetitive trading patterns and definitive market cycles has been proven in innumerable studies—technical analysis remains somewhat of a mystery for most investors and traders. The issue is that while the vast majority of investors and traders actually do recognize that technical analysis does work, most people in the market do not know how to correctly analyze a chart.

At last count, there were more than 175 recognized technical indicators. About the Author

Joseph R. Hooper has been a property developer, stockbroker, and bank owner. Aaron R. Zalewski has a background in the finance industry, where he worked as an analyst within the investment banking industry. Zalewski left that profession to pursue a career as a full-time investor and is now Director at Compound Stock Earnings. He co-host's Compound Stock Earnings' weekly financial talk-back radio program, Unconventional Wi$dom—The CSE Investment Show, and is coauthor of the book Covered Calls and LEAPS: A Wealth Option.

Edwin L. Useless and misleading

Here is the major problem with this book. It requires you to use the CSE software in order to use the approach touted in the book which means if you are like me and use your brokerages technical analysis software, this book is completely useless to you. What makes this even worst is the author's don't even give you the name of the indicators and parameters so that you could use their approach universally. Instead they attempt to name things like MACD and Stochastics something completely different which gives it the appearance it is some completely new indicator when it is not. If you require the buyer to use specific software, then indicate that in your description. This book was a big disappointment and did not live up to its title at all.

Wiley publishing has an excellent reputation for publishing top-notch technical books. This book will go a long way towards hurting that reputation.
The book appears to be nothing more than a high priced shill for the authors stock recommendation service. Technical indicators are frequently not named, just "L2 is a momentum indicator" without saying which momentum indicator. Even when named, as the 5 moving averages, the parameters are not given. They state "channel lines are mathematically determined" with no definition of how determined.
The book also frequently refers to techniques with no definition provided, such as "V", "TSS", "Hippo", and others. They are meaningless without a definition which apparently is in another book.
The book may be suitable as a partial manual for the web service the authors offer, but is not suitable for anyone else.

Just another "Buy My System" Scam!

This book is no different from those dozens of emails that most traders get every day, promising nirvana IF you just BUY my system/software/mentoring, etc. At least THEY give you the "come on" for FREE! Wiley used to be a reputable publisher...but, apparently, no more.

Amazon should have some kind of filter that separates TRUE "stand-alone' guides from DRECK--like this one---that are useless without buying expensive add-ons.

A Must for Chili Pepper Fans

It's great to see a book about a band written in their own words. It has been on heck of a ride for RCHP and even if you are a hardcore fan, you will have insight into this band that you never had before. The photographs are incredible, but the band member comments and stories really make them take a back seat. You absolutely cannot go wrong buying this book. You will be entertained and will learn a lot about a wonderful band who have seen and done it all....Bravo, Peppers :)

Fantastic book. Like a great dessert you savor by the mouthful, wishing it would never end. A must for fans. A must for anyone who wants to understand the evolution of genius. Try it, you'll like it!

Nowadays find a good band like RHCP is hard as hell. So a book like this, telling their story from their words is a great experience. I have to say: this book is more than a coffee-table gift, must go with all the records of the peppers. The pictures are amazing, specially the crazy-ones (ex. some members in drag - tasteful) for a fan who have their old LP's to the newest fans who download their music, this book should be in your home next to a guitar or a mic.

An Unsettling and Entertaining Story

Michelle Dowling feels great about the new job she just landed with Corporate Financial. It doesn't take long to realize though that they expect more out of their employees than any other company. They also seem to possess an unusual hold over their workers, and the clients they consult with. All of a sudden Michelle finds herself involved in a situation way over her head. At the same time, businesses across the nation--who are all linked by a common thread--start taking advantage of their employees and begin treating them like property.

I've read other books that JF Gonzalez helped write, but this was my first time reading a solo work of his. I really enjoyed it and will search out more of his novels now. This book will make you angry at times (in a good way), and think twice about your job and some of your coworkers. If you ever encounter anyone with a blank face that states "This is what I do", or see someone from HR show up at your house unexpectedly, RUN!

A Conspiracy Theorist's Wet Dream

While I was reading THE CORPORATION, I kept thinking of Bentley Little. This novel is very much in the same vein as Little's books. In fact, I would call it a quasi-blend of THE ASSOCIATION and THE STORE. Gonzalez's novel has that same feel and same dread running through its heart; the mood is paranoia and hopelessness. With all the problems in the recent economy and employees feeling stuck or semi-stuck in jobs they should be "lucky to have", the book can also be considered timely. (Or at least timely when it was published as opposed to when I read it.)

The story follows Michelle Dowling as she finds a dream job at Corporate Financial Consultants: excellent pay, generous benefits and the ability to start planning her future with her fianc�. However, she starts to realize that her new company has its fingers in its employee's personal lives a bit more than normal. And that their control over employees is expanding. Michelle quickly finds herself fighting to maintain her privacy while not knowing who to trust.

While Gonzalez did his regular awesome job with his characters and making them come alive, I found elements of the plot a bit much. The degree of control that Corporate Financial Consultants exhibits over other companies and governments, local and international, was a tad much to believe. While reading it I kept fluctuating between "Oh, come on!" and "Oh, crap!" And of course since the corporation's reach was a bit unbelievable, it meant the climax to the book had to be a bit unbelievable also. It made sense and followed logically and was consistent with everything that Gonzalez wrote, but it was a little convenient despite being so difficult to achieve. All told, this is a solid book and will be enjoyed. I would recommend though that after reading this book, read Bentley Little's THE ASSOCIATION. That will build upon your fears and freak you out completely!

Reading This in Your Lunch Break? The Corporation Does Not Allow Personal Time! Recommence Your Work Immediately!

This is very different to the other novels I've read by author J.F. Gonzalez. Less horror but actually a lot scarier. I'd actually say this is most well written, where you care the most about his characters compared to his other books. The main character which we follow like a fly on the wall Michelle Dowling lands her dream job to set her up financially in the years to come. The corporation (Corporate Financial Consultants) seem to have been blown away by her resume. So impressed that they've sent her to help with the takeover of a company in El Paso. It's only when the employees in El Paso go out for after work drinks that Michelle starts to notice everything isn't quite right. When a colleague she is supposed to work with the next day who didn't speak positively for the company disappears, Michelle realises something is very, very wrong. Meanwhile across America employees on leave are getting dragged back to work by their colleagues who have shown up on their doorstep who have strict instructions to return them to the office, because they were not at their work cubicle at 8:30am sharp. Other workers are being told they will be granted half an hour later in the day to buy a pillow, swag and whatever else will fit under their desk. It's hard to go into any further depth with this plot than that, since doing so would spoil things for those who haven't read it yet. As you get going you'll immediately start thinking of a famous short story, well maybe more so the movie version of it. I won't mention what that one is but by all means rest assured that The Corporation is not a carbon copy of that and this one's plot is much, much better. My only criticism would be after the main events end p252, it takes way too long to wrap up and actually a little boring pushing through another 25 pages to page 277. A four of five page epilogue would have wrapped this up nicely. I'd still rate the novel five stars overall but the ending should have been edited down.

Once you've finished this you might also want to check out Night Chills by Dean Koontz or Company by Max Barry. Both these are thrillers using elements you come across in this one and would be quite scary if ever adopted by the real corporate world.

About the Author
Anna Seghers (née Netty Reiling; 1900–1983) was born in Mainz, Germany, into an upper-middle-class Jewish family. She was a sickly and introverted child by her own account, but became an intellectually curious student, eventually earning a doctorate in art history at the University of Heidelberg in 1924; her first story, written under the name Antje Seghers, was published in the same year. In 1925 she married a Hungarian immigrant economist and began her writing career in earnest. By 1929 Seghers had joined the Communist Party, given birth to her first child, and received the Kleist Prize for her first novel, The Revolt of the Fisherman. Having settled in France in 1933, Seghers was forced to flee again after the 1940 Nazi invasion. With the aid of Varian Fry, Seghers, her husband, and two children sailed from Marseille to Mexico on a ship that included among its passengers Victor Serge, André Breton, and Claude Lévi-Strauss. After the war she moved to East Berlin, where she became an emblematic figure of East German letters, actively championing the work of younger writers from her position as president of the Writers Union and publishing at a steady pace. Among Seghers’s internationally regarded works are The Seventh Cross (1939; adapted for film in 1944 by MGM), one of the only World War II–era depictions of Nazi concentration camps; the novella Excursion of the Dead Girls (1945); The Dead Stay Young (1949); and the story collection Benito’s Blue (1973).

Margot Bettauer Dembo has translated works by Judith Hermann, Robert Gernhardt, Joachim Fest, Ödön von Horváth, Feridun Zaimoglu, and Hermann Kant, among others. She was awarded the Goethe-Institut/Berlin Translator’s Prize in 1994 and the Helen and Kurt Wolff Translator’s Prize in 2003. Dembo also worked as a translator for two feature documentary films, The Restless Conscience, which was nominated for an Academy Award, and The Burning Wall.

Peter Conrad was born in Australia, and since 1973 has taught English literature at Christ Church, Oxford. He has published nineteen books on a variety of subjects; among the best known are Modern Times, Modern Places; A Song of Love and Death; The Everyman History of English Literature; and studies of Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles. His most recent book is Creation: Artists, Gods and Origins. He has contributed features and reviews to many magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Observer, the New Statesman, The Guardian, and The Monthly.

Heinrich Böll (1917–1985) was one of Germany’s foremost post–World War II writers. He wrote short stories, essays, plays, and novels, the most famous of which are Billiards at Half-Past Nine, The Clown, Group Portrait with Lady, and The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum. Böll was awarded the Georg Büchner Prize in 1967 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1972.

Transit is a novel you will not forget.

From the first paragraph it puts you inside the mind of a man--the narrator--who is fleeing the Nazi advance into France in 1939. He gets to Marseille, where he has to decide whether he wants to try to leave on one of the last ships. Marseille is claustrophobic. It offers only boredom, muted terror, and the frenetic but likely senseless activity of convincing bureaucrats to issue visas and tickets to leave. We wait with the narrator in one dismal café or other where the mistral blows endlessly outside and you can't get a drink unless it's an "alcohol day."

Like Humphrey Bogart's character in Casablanca, the narrator is in love with a woman married to another man, but Marseille is no Hollywood movie set. Thoughts and feelings become unstable, then warp under the strain. The decision to leave Europe behind forever is not easy. A family where all except the grandmother have been granted visas refuse to leave even though the grandmother is certain to die within a few months and then all the others will all be interned. Marie, with whom the narrator has fallen in love, hesitates again and again because she refuses to accept that her husband the novelist Weidel is dead. The narrator too is confused. He says he doesn't want to leave, then puts all his energy and cunning into trying to get a transit visa.

We know little about the nameless narrator. He escaped first from a German concentration camp and then from a French work camp, but he does not seem ideological or especially political. He seems to be an ordinary person who just hates Nazis: "their murderous commands and objectionable insistence on obedience, their disgusting boasts." For this reason it's not possible to read Transit and think: "well, that wouldn't have happened to me back then" or "that can never happen to me." This is one of Seghers' major achievements.

One of the most moving moments is when the narrator reads Weidel's unpublished novel. It's the first novel the narrator has ever finished, and the beauty of the prose makes him feel that German is once more his language--the language of his childhood and youth, before the Nazis commandeered and disfigured it. This may not be what most people think of when they think of Nazi crimes, but for the narrator it is a very real, deeply personal loss. Perhaps Anna Seghers hoped her novel would reclaim and renew the German language for its first readers in the same way. Beautifully translated by Margot Bettauer Dembo, this English language version has the same simplicity and strength of feeling as Seghers' original prose.

Human Limbo

This is one of those rare books about WWII that is written before the war is over. Neither the author nor the protagonists know who will ultimately win. Is it better to be imprisoned by the Germans or the Free French? Will Hitler take Marseille? Which is worse for one's visa prospects -- having fought for Franco or having lost one's identification papers in a concentration camp? Does escaping from the Germans make you friend or foe? America is still neutral. South America is still free of Nazis. How long will that last? All of which adds to this wonderful story about humans, indeed an entire continent, in limbo.

A rare view of the WWII era

"Transit" provides a rare picture of everyday life in the early WWII era, the life of those waiting and hoping to migrate out of Europe and away from war. Through an unusual love story the reader experiences the complications, anxiety, heartbreak and daily challenges of those in transit. The narrative from the perspective of one man makes the story easy to read and enjoyable even though the character himself isn't always particularly likeable.

Luis Torgo is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Porto in Portugal. Taken over by competition

It's January 2014 - and I am glad that better books have come out since I posted the original review, and one no longer has to accept CRC Hall's greedy pricing, and pay $65 for what really is a pretty imperfect book just because there is no choice. I'd say - pass on "Data mining with R", and go for "Introduction to statistical learning" by James, Witten, Hastie and Tibshirani if you want a high-quality, accessible R-illustrated textbook, or for "Machine learning with R" by Brett Lantz if you are eager to jump into hacking, and value code over theory.

Excellent guide with real world case studies

If you are on a journey to become a data scientist, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this book.

Since R is an open source language with a strong community, there is no dearth of information and tutorials which will help the beginner quickly get up to speed (I highly recommend 'R Cookbook' by Paul Teetor).

What was lacking, in my opinion, was a book targeted at practitioners. A book which you can pick up and start using R in your work. A book which will compress the learning curve and equip you for real world mastery - to the point where, perhaps, you might head straight to Kaggle.com and take part in data mining competitions.

The book by Luis Torgo admirably fills this gap. In the context of the case studies, the author painstakingly describes the challenges one would face in real life - such as - how to go about cleaning and munging the data, how to visualize and summarize the data, how to come up with plausible hypothesis and test them. Since data mining is as much art as science, this kind of approach where you see an expert in action and see how they go about making design choices is highly educational.

Along the tour, you also learn about several popular add-on libraries such as xts, rocr and hmisc.

Once again, an excellent how-to book and highly recommended as your 2nd R book.

Invaluable resource for data miners

The book starts with an Introduction to R. Nicely written, it explains concepts that are needed to use this programming language for data mining. The book is then divided in four case studies. Each case study introduces data mining concepts that are illustrated using R.

First, pre-processing and data visualization are introduced through the prediction of algae blooms. Second, come the modelling and time ordering with the stock market application. Then, outlier detection and clustering are presented through fraud detection. Finally, feature selection and cross-validation are introduced through the classification of microarray samples. There is no introduction to data mining, but it's not a problem since concepts are explained through the different case studies.

Theoretical concepts are always linked to examples. This is the case for most of the data mining books. Luis goes a step further by linking each application to the corresponding code in R. It is thus easy to both understand a concept as well as implementing it with R. This is certainly one of the best book for a direct implementation of data mining algorithms. Another good point of the book is that for most of the problems there are different ways to solve them.

I have one remark regarding the stock market prediction chapter. I have already discussed this issue when I was working in finance. The author states that the percentage of profitable trades should be above 50% to have a successful trading strategy. This is not always the case. Imagine a system where each winning trade brings $2 while loosing trades costs $1. Since you can earn more money with winning trades than what you loose with loosing trades, you can thus still have a successful trading strategy with 48% of winning trades, for example.

As a conclusion, this is an invaluable resource for data miners, R programmers as well as people involved in fields such as fraud detection and stock market prediction. If you're serious about data mining and want to learn from experiences in the field, don't hesitate!

About the Author

Harriet Lerner, Ph.D., is one of our nation’s most loved and respected relationship experts. Renowned for her work on the psychology of women and family relationships, she served as a staff psychologist at the Menninger Clinic for more than two decades. A distinguished lecturer, workshop leader, and psychotherapist, she is the author of The Dance of Anger and other bestselling books. What is my anger telling me?

A large number of books on the topic of anger have recently come into my house -- how to recognize anger, what it means, and how to "control" it. This is the only one of these books that I liked. All the other books on this topic seem to treat anger as a loss of control, which should be repressed. In fact, they seem to be about impulse control more than about anger. (I have nothing against people learning to control their impulses, I just don't think that it's the same topic as the topic of anger.) Luckily, I did not pay for any of these books, so I can just be glad I read this one, and forget about the others.
In this book, Lerner treats anger as a signal that something is going wrong. She explains that only when we address the "something wrong" in a useful way will the anger go away. Then she explores the "dances" we engage in, in our attempts to make ourselves feel better. She suggests that most of our attempts to make ourselves feel better focus on the person(s) we think made us mad, rather than on ourselves. She compassionately and wisely shows how to disengage from the anger and the counter-productive patterns, while staying connected and acting with integrity. However, she also acknowledges the effect that this sort of change can have on other people in the dance, and she provides guidance in maintaining oneself in the face of countermoves.
Fundamentally, this is not the kind of self-help book that provides 10 easy steps to ridding oneself of anger. Instead, it describes a different way to think about anger, and discussion of the ways in wich one can respond to anger. No easy steps, just a way of thinking, which can radically change the way one engages with the world.

Use anger to make your life better

I found this book as impossible to put down as any thriller -- it was fascinating even when it didn't directly apply to me. But most of it did.
All my life I have had a problem expressing anger. It usually comes out as tears, which does not impress anyone or improve the situation, or else I swallow it and tell myself it's not important. This book has helped me to understand that when I'm angry, it means something is wrong, and I attempt to calmly identify what that is, and take steps to make it better. I'm not expert at this yet, but the book has given me hope that small changes can lead to big improvement over time.
All in all, this is a great book for anyone whose anger has ever made them feel ashamed or powerless. Read and reread until your anger works for you, not against you.

I highly recommend this to anyone in a struggling relationship. After 10 years of marriage I could see no way of getting along with my wife. My therapist suggested this book and it just opened up a whole new world for me. My marriage is safe and strong. Don't let the title fool you, this is just as much for men as women, yes I am a guy.....
