For the past two years Michael has been working for Neurotech Solutions Ltd, which is a rapidly growing Israeli startup bringing revolutionizing solutions in the field of research and treatment of ADHD, as lead programmer. Michael led the development of unique ADHD training game programs, which are based on the Adobe Flash platform powered by open source 3D libraries such as PV3D and Away3D. Although in everyday life he works mostly on RIA and desktop application development, his true passion is 3D graphics and game programming. In his little spare time Michael works with such technologies as Java3D Epic's UDK, Unity3D, and wide range of Flash open source 3D libraries from which Away3D is his favorite .Michael is a zealous promoter of cutting-edge 3D technologies, especially those that are open source, and misses no opportunity to speak on these subjects at local game industry events and conferences. The sequel to other Away3D books

There are plenty of good books to introduce you to Away3D. This book - Away 3D Cookbook - is not one of them. It's more like the sequel to those books. There is certainly some overlap but this will cover topics in a great deal more depth than what you'll get out of a good introductory book.
You can tell this is going to be an advanced book right off the bat the book starts chapter 1 with Working with Away3D Materials. Any other book would start out with how to set up your programming environment to handle working with Away3D. This cookbook assumes you already have that covered and are ready to get on to some meaty topics.
On the downside some - not all - of the examples can get a bit involved. Nothing too verbose but some of the examples take a few pages of code. Fortunately all of the code samples are available online.
If you have been playing around with Away3D for a while and want to know how much more there is to know then I'd suggest skimming through the table-of-contents of this book.
I'm really hoping that this book will be re-released to cover Away3D 4.0 as soon as it's out of beta. That would make the perfect companion for experienced Away3D developers to jump up to the new version.

One book to do anything!

Michael Ivanov is a professional Flash developers, he worked in the field of game development for 5 more than 5 years.
His guide covers any possible thing doable with the version 3.6 of Away3D in 80 practical recipes. Notice that this book can be very useful even to people that are mostly interested to Molehill (Away3D 4.0) since there are many other tutorials as Physics, Rigging and Textures, the last chapter even covers "Broomstick". From the website of Packt it is possible to download the files used in any tutorial.
I think some of the most interesting paragraphs are:
- Following a third-person view with a spring camera
- Animating (Rigging) characters in 3DsMax
- Controlling bones animation in Collada
- Morphing objects
- Prefab3D
- Working with external assets
- Creating a physical car with JigLib
- Adding Box2D physics to Away3D objects
- Optimizing performance
- Detecting collisions between objects in Away3D
- Beginning Molehill API
This is probably the most complete book about 3D and Flash I have ever read.
The cool thing about it is that it covers so many things that it can be used as only source to make a 3D game with Flash. As you can notice the paragraphs I listed above are the perfect mix of things you will need to build a third person 3D game. ;)

It's became very popular today to speak about Flash as a dying technology that will be replaced by HTML5 or Unity.
But whoever really checked things out recently in the development community, knows that the future of Flash is even more glorious than its past. The new features for mobile and 3D authoring place Flash as the leading environment for Rich Interactive Applications.
Molehill and Away3D, the engine and API for the amazing 3D abilities, enables the developer today to make a console like gaming experience on the web and mobile platforms, with extremely short code and no need to know C++ and open GL. This is a real revolution in the 3D world.
This book provides a comprehensive overview of the possibilities that are now opened to the Flash developer.
It has proven me again, the modest AS3 programmer, that my language is not only in the same league of C++ and Java, but definitely superior to them. I feel proud to be a Flash programmer.
I already used one of the samples in the book for a project I do. The code was available in the publisher's website, and it's very easy to use and customize. Thanks.
