Early sections look at a particularly tricky subject--string processing--giving you several techniques for increasing speed and reducing object creation. The in-depth examination of the costs and benefits of string concatenation and the immutability of Java String objects will help you uncover possible hot spots that cause lagging performance with strings.

Professional Java programmers must read this book

I was very skeptical when I picked up this book, because most authors on Java performance don't seem to have actually tested their theories. Dov Bulka, however, has included charts demonstrating actual performance gains. He's also shown how some kinds of purported optimizations _don't_ have a measurable effect, which is an excellent way of knowing what to avoid.
The author never compromises software engineering or program correctness in the pursuit of performance. His suggestions are practical and applicable to a wide variety of programs. The book is also well-written, clear, and a joy to read.
As the subtitle says, it's primarily about server-side processing. It's not going to tell you how to scroll tables faster, nor is it going to tell you to use a quicksort instead of a bubble sort. Still, every Java programmer should know how this author goes about working with Java performance, because it's a great framework for making improvements.
The book claims to be volume 1. I'm really looking forward to volume 2.

So far I'm unimpressed

I bought this a couple of weeks ago and really just started it. However, it is distressing to find an error of the magnitude described in "Optimization 3" on page 14. There the author compares the execution times of String comparisons both case sensitive and case insensitive. It is noted that "an unintuitive result" is when one of the IgnoreCase compares executes faster than its same case equivalent. A reason that digs into Java internals of both "equals" and "equalsIgnoreCase" is offered. The problem I see is that in my book the IgnoreCase test is timed for 1 million iterations and the same case test for 10 million iterations! So either there is an error in the text or the comparison of "equivalent" benchmarks is false. Leaving one without useful conclusions. The publisher's (Addison-Wesley) website does little to help - it says the book has a supporting website, but doesn't provide a link - nor does there appear to be a link referenced in the book anywhere I could find. :(

An excellent, easy read that I could apply immediately.

This book covers the basics of improving the performance of server side java programs by writing different java statements. I like the fact that it had just the answers, not excessive amounts of padding. I especially liked the chapter on taking an existing, well written java program that was a web server, and optimising it in several stages. The stages were consistent with the optimisations discussed in the preceding chapters which helped put it those chapters into context nicely. The optimisations turned a good web server written in Java into a much faster one, which was good to see.
I describe this as a "basic" book on optimisation because the chapter on RMI was rather light, presumably because of the 80:20 rule wereby the biggest gains can be had with the simplest of coding changes. Going into more detail would have made the book thicker so perhaps it was best it was left as it was. There is perhaps an opportunity for someone to write an "advanced" version at some later stage.
I'd recommend this book to someone who is an experienced java programmer who wants to make their java programs run quicker. I certainly found it useful in my own java programs.

R.J. Fox has brought the phrase "stranger in a strange land" to life in Love and Vodka! Fox's tales of social/language barriers and culture shock are relatable to anyone who has ever felt like an outsider is some way. Additionally, Fox pours out his heart in stirring ways as he describes his adventures in the pursuit of love. Readers can expect to keep the pages turning, because Fox has managed to make his experiences so relatable to any individual who has ever been head over heels in love. After reading this book, I felt like I had a whole new understanding of the idea that the truth is stranger than fiction.

Worthy of several toasts

Love, science reveals, is really just another form of madness. The brain undergoes similar changes, from the rational into the irrational, and the resulting pheromone chemical soup tastes like insanity.

Dearborn-native (Michigan) and author R.J. Fox would probably not debate any of that. It took all of twenty minutes for him to fall in love with a foreign exchange student he spotted in a line for an amusement park ride. When she returned to her native Ukraine, he followed her, engagement ring in his pocket. And more madness ensued.

In his memoir, Love and Vodka: My Surreal Adventures in Ukraine (Fish Out of Water Books, October 2015), Fox recounts that initial meeting with Katya and the trip he took to Ukraine a year later to bring her back to the States again—as his wife. His adventures on foreign soil as he works up the nerve toward a marriage proposal and earn the blessing of Katya’s family are both outrageous and hilarious.

Babushka-wearing old women curse him, snarl and chase him, threaten to splatter him with bleach. Well-meaning hosts force vodka on him in toast after toast that he finds he cannot deny, resulting in drunken stupors, cold outdoor showers, and barefoot walks across sharp-edged rocks in his underwear. And so the story unfolds as Fox learns about a culture and a world far different than his own. Within its traditions and people, he finds himself in comical situations, but he also learns lessons about himself, love, and home.

What has remained with him from that mad and maddening journey these many years later, Fox says, “is the immersive experience of being in a whole other world than the one I know. Out in general public, people had a distrust toward me because I was not from Ukraine. This was in 2001, so not too far removed from the Soviet years when Ukraine was the center of missile-building during the Cold War. If you like reading, especially non-fiction, go out and pick up a copy of "Love and Vodka."
It's a crazy whirlwind of a memoir written by R.J. "Foxy" Fox about how he met not just his wife, but the woman of his dreams.
Before reading this, I thought I was a "hopeless romantic" (emphasis on hopeless?) But the love this man has after the "chance" (fateful) meeting he has one day at an amusement park is nothing short of extraordinary, only to be out done by what he does AFTER meeting her.
If you've ever wanted to become more cultured in the world, but don't really want to leave the states (...kinda like me) this is GREAT book that explores and teaches a small, but crucial part of another culture! Not to mention getting to laugh as "Bobby" embarrasses himself countless times trying to learn a new things.
Foxy was my high school teacher for a few classes and after reading this, I see him in a new, incredible light about what he's willing to do for love and passion (and yes, for the record, he talks just like he writes).
Not too long, but more importantly, a great read from a great teacher and a better person.

A Must Have for School Admin

This book will make you rethink that way you evaluate the instruction in your school. THe approach is much like medical rounds that med students use but when adapted to education it is a powerful tool. Our district is using this process and we love it. It is reflective and insightful. BUy this book and follow the process step by step as it is intended.

This publication meets the standards needed for future administrators. The standard of exposing you to additional information to help support your teaching staff and bringing in outside support in a positive way to help. It is very technical read and some sentences and concepts you have to re-read for understanding and clarity. It is not a quick read, you need time to process it.

This book is more of a textbook about instructional rounds. If you want to know the why of instructional rounds, this book will fill that need. It is an easy read, just a bit longer then it needs to be. This is a great book for those starting out with instructional rounds.

He demonstrates that the Zhongshan king Cuo constructed a hybrid cultural identity, consolidated his power, and aimed to maintain political order at court after his death through the buildings, sculpture, and inscriptions that he commissioned.

About the Author
Xiaolong Wu is Associate Professor of Art History at Hanover College, Indiana. He received his BA in Chinese archaeology from Beijing University and his PhD in Art History from the University of Pittsburgh. His research interest focuses on the material culture of late Bronze Age China and its interactions with the Eurasian Steppe, and issues related to ethnicity, hybridity, agency, and political power.

Excellent book...buy this one first

I'm always a bit suspicious of the "Dummies" and "Idiots" books, as many of them really short on information. But this book is really full of information about how to get started in ham radio. It is well organized and well written. One note: this has very little detail about how to pick out your first radio; plenty of general information, but it is not a product selection guide. But if you read it, you will realize, as the author recommends, that the best way to buy a radio is to make some friends in the ham radio community and get some help picking out equipment. But I can't recommend this book enough....really helpful.

It's like a mentor in book form!

The author is a well-known radio amateur who writes a regular column in QST, the largest ham radio magazine. In this book he gives a broad overview of the hobby, introducing the newcomer to its many facets. It takes the reader through the process of earning a ham license, then shows the new ham what he can do with that license. I plan to buy a copy for each graduate of our radio club's licensing course. The new edition of the book (August, 2013) updates all the information in the original. Outstanding book for anyone with an interest in amateur radio.

A broad overview of everything HAM can do, not enough detail to learn much

My goals with this book were twofold, picking up knowledge helping me get licensed, and picking up skills to actually operate the gear.

The book has a general overview of everything HAM can do. It's not pretty deep on actual details. For someone new to the subject, it actually was kind of surreal. Photos of 1970 automotive dashboard, CRT monitors, moving TO 9600 bps rates.

There's also a lot of general life advice like searching the internet or to be early for meetings. I wasn't sure if the author understood the "for dummies" was a tongue-in-cheeks concept. At any rate, this is advice not specific to HAM radio.

There's a lot of detail on how to get licensed. Disappointingly, it's all about the process of getting licensed, not the skills or knowledge to get licensed.

There's extensive information about building your own antenna, how to organize a computer desk and multiple stationary radios, and designing your own room dedicated to HAM radio. Once again, in a for dummies book, is that going to be of interest to someone new to the subject?

In summary, somewhat entertaining overview of everything you can do with a HAM radio that you'll want to read front to back. I wished I had gotten a book focusing more on the beginner and teaching hands-on skills.
