About the Author
Henry Petroski is the Aleksandar S. Vesic Professor of Civil Engineering and a professor of history at Duke University. He has written broadly on the topics of design, success and failure, and the history of engineering and technology. His fifteen books on these subjects include To Engineer Is Human, The Pencil, The Evolution of Useful Things, Success through Failure and The Essential Engineer. In addition to his books, which have been translated into more than a dozen languages, Petroski has written numerous general-interest articles for publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times and The Wall Street Journal, and he writes regular columns for both American Scientist and ASEE Prism. Petroski is a distinguished member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and is a fellow of both the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Institution of Engineers of Ireland. He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society and the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.

A great resource

This is a delightful little book providing "one engineer's selection of thoughts, quotations, anecdotes, facts, and arcana relating to the practice, history, and traditions of his profession. The entries range from brief essays to lists of great achievements." The book is diversely informative, sometimes truly enlightening, and often humorous too. The emphasis is on civil engineering, and I've bought a copy for every member of the technical staff in my office. A must-have for all engineers, especially civil engineers, at all stages of their careers. I'm not aware of any other book which covers a similar scope.

Wonderful writer. I am not an engineer, but have enjoyed this author's work for several years. If he were not an engineer, he should be teaching clear, expository writing at some technical college.

Engaging bons mots from Mr. Petroski

Very engaging collection of inspiring "bons mots" involving the ingenuity and talent to be found in the field of engineering. Brought it as a gift for someone and, after reading a few of the entries, I found it as very on point for this person who, though not an engineer on paper, is none-the-less one in spirit and extremely gifted. He currently owns a company that designs & "crafts" industrial products for the construction field.
