Detailed, yes, but the best resource for the linguistics student

I bought this book (plus the other two in the series: Volumes 1-3) for a very challenging linguistics class at UC Santa Barbara. The professor teaches a fast-paced and difficult 10-week course covering the entire English-speaking world, including the variations of English spoken in South Africa, India, Kenya, Jamaica, and pidgin varieties in Africa, Hawaii, and Asia. For the British Isles alone, we covered at least 10 accents. Though I initially found this book difficult, toward the end of the course I began to see it as an extremely reliable and helpful reference. Wells is outstanding at identifying and explaining historical developments in English, such as the FLEECE merger, the FOOT/STRUT split, and the evolution of the PRICE lexical set. He explains these developments in a way that provided a sort of foundation that helped me to "get" the material. The professor seemed to think that simple memorization was enough, but I found that Wells' approach was superior.

Most linguistic textbooks seem unnecessarily detailed. The problem is that writing about linguistics requires a standardized way of representing sounds in print. Once I got used to Wells' way of doing it, I found him easier to understand than, say, the Atlas of North American English. Also, Wells' grasp of what is going on in the British Isles is superior to other references.

The other problem with the field of linguistics (this is me editorializing) is that as a subject it is fun. In order to carve out a reputation as an "expert," or to justify a high rate of pay, linguists must take some of the fun out of it and turn it into something rigorous and difficult. Or at the very least they must create a difficult sub-specialty within the field that only they can excel in. This is rather tiring, needless to say. I found Wells' style to be less concerned with this type of posturing than other academic sources. I got an "A" in the course, and the bit of extra reading I did in the Wells books was instrumental.

Accents and dialectology can be pursued as a gigantic sequence of unrelated facts. Wells knows his facts, all right, probably better than anyone else, but what really distinguishes this book (the first of a three-volume series) is how Wells rigorously integrates his facts into a systematic pattern, based on the history of the English dialects and their descent from a common ancestor. He also covers synchrony--the linguistic system of the individual at any given time--with great insight.
A delight to study and consult, for any professional linguist or serious amateur. ....

An absolutely fundamental book in any study of the phonology of English. What is unique about Wells is that he systematically covers _all_ the different accents of English found in the world. Most other works focus either on North America or Southern England, with everything else treated as an afterthought at best. Wells shows how the historical differences in accents came about, and will give the reader a far more complete understanding of the how, the when, and the what of differences between different accents.
