At the highest levels of the government, however, entering the war appeared inevitable. The AVG was one way of gaining experience in this vicious war, while increasing support for the nations fighting the Axis powers. Despite incredible odds against them from numerically superior Japanese forces and a near complete lack of supply and replacement parts, they took the first successful fight to the Japanese during a time of Japan's unrelenting successes. It was not pretty, and their legend has eclipsed the reality, but the reality of the AVG is still an amazing story. Led by Claire Lee Chennault, they made history.

Well done and a true telling of a famous flying group

The truth of the Americans British and Chinese contributions to the success of the Most Famous Flying Group ever. The story of how the Japanese military thrust to conquer India and China ended at the Salween Gorge is a climactic ending to a true life tale. Also is the fateful for telling of the tragic unnecessary loss of so many American and British flyers going over Europe before a fighter escort was available was murder by blindness and stupidity on the part by the military planners that could have been prevented if Chennault had been listened to.

tells the story

tells the story with a good deal of detail, giving the names of the various players/pilots. I was a bit more interested in the overall context between China to the North; India to the West; Japan invading from the southeast, although this book was focused on the Flying Tigers and did give a fair amount of context of all of the players contenting in Burma in WW II
