About the Author
Dr. Troy Hicks (@hickstro) is a professor of Literacy and Technology at Central Michigan University and focuses his work on the teaching of writing, literacy and technology, and teacher education and professional development. A former middle school teacher, he collaborates with K - 12 colleagues and explores how they implement newer literacies in their classrooms. Hicks directs CMU's Chippewa River Writing Project, a site of the National Writing Project, and he frequently conducts professional development workshops related to writing and technology. Hicks is author of the Heinemann titles Crafting Digital Writing (2013) and The Digital Writing Workshop (2009), as well as a co-author of Because Digital Writing Matters (Jossey-Bass, 2010) and Create, Compose, Connect! (Routledge/Eye on Education, 2014). He blogs at Digital Writing, Digital Teaching. In March 2011, Hicks was honored with CMU's Provost's Award for junior faculty who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in research and creative activity. Insightful Inquiry into Learning

Troy Hicks again brings his focus to the world of digital literacy, and the result is both an insider's look at how students are composing with multimodal tools, and how teachers can bring digital possibilities into the classroom. What's refreshing here is that Hicks takes an outside view of the work, offering analytical insights into the composing practices that appears to be going on with various projects, and then expanding those ideas into connections to literacy. This book is a fantastic resource that goes beyond the sharing of student work. It provides a model for how to look at the digital compositions of students, and make sense of the choices they are making. By doing so, teachers can then better guide the compositional practices of learners.

Amazing guide for Digital Writing

If you are a classroom teacher interested in using more digital writing in your class or extending your use, this book is probably for you. Mr. Hicks does an amazing job explaining how traditional elements of writing are manifest differently in digital formats. He keeps the focus on solid writing instruction, but explains clearly how digital texts have different features, a different form. He covers websites, blogs, wikis, audio, video and presentations. He's really a teacher's teacher, rather than a fool trying to convince you that "digital writing is where it's at!" (which is too much of what we see these days) He clearly thinks writing is where it's at, and then here's how you can teach writing effectively in digital formats.
Additionally, he makes clear connections to the Common Core, in case you need to justify why all your students are writing a blog this year. He clearly uses a lot of the tools he suggests.
His resources and suggestions are amazing and useful. His student examples are (mostly) inspiring.
