Mr Chidambaram s War The low, flat-topped hills of south Orissa have been home to the Dongria Kondh long before there was a country called India or a state called Orissa... Walking with the Comrades The terse, typewritten note slipped under my door in a sealed envelope confirmed my appointment with India s single biggest internal security challenge . I d been waiting for months to hear from them... Trickledown Revolution In the early morning hours of 2 July 2010, in the remote forests of Adilabad, the Andhra Pradesh State Police fired a bullet into the chest of a man called Cherukuri Rajkumar, known to his comrades as Azad... Combining brilliant analysis and reportage by one of India s iconic writers, Broken Republic examines the nature of progress and development in the emerging global superpower, and asks fundamental questions about modern civilization itself.

Review
She is a natural rebel ... Roy's version of India is uncompromising ... She is the insider on the outside, part of a movement and yet, as a writer, inevitably alone - the individual at the heart of a crowd New Statesman Her prose is vivid and poetic: witty wordplay interspersed with biting satire Independent Scalpel-sharp wit and insight Express Tribune (Karachi Edition) A fine piece of reportage ... The language is lyrical but Roy's critique is excoriating Scotsman Magazine

Insightful. Emotional. The other side of the story, not usually covered by mainstream Indian TV.

Arundhati Roy has done one thing many haven't- she lives with the Adivasis and gets a perspective on the Naxalite wars from their side. All we see typically on TV are people opposed to Naxalism sitting in air-conditioned studios in Delhi without understanding the deeper problems these poor people face. This is an emotional piece of writing- so there's bound to be extreme stances taken. Whether one agrees with Arundhati or not, the people she's talking about deserve appreciation and attention in this day of rampaging western capitalism. The conclusion I've drawn after reading this book is there being a need for sustainable capitalism; a society where ALL people (not just urban and/or non-poor) have a voice to say yes or no.

I will say there's more reading and different points of view required to gain deeper understanding of this contemporary issue.

Nice read.

Roy’s analysis is astounding as usual. Her reportage is precise and she divulged the facts that we never ever get to learn from the main stream media. Her views may be leftist but it depends on how you take it. This book is list of facts that happened in the past and everyday struggle of the adivasis, than a guide to solutions for all the problems and nothing else. The language she used is very simple and easy for everyone to read and understand. If you get this book, you don’t have to buy the other book ‘Walking with the comrades’, it’s just an expanded version of a chapter in the this book.
