Having been a career Marine Corps officer, I would describe this book as being in the style of a logbook, e.g., officer of the day's log where everything of note occurring on a watch is entered, to be read later by the commanding officer or some other senior person. What I found fascinating was the author's powers of observation especially on some historic occasions, e.g., entering Yokohama for the first time, meeting the Japanese dignitaries for the first time, experiencing deaths aboard the ships, and firing salutes to visiting dignitaries (so many that I wondered where they kept the huge quantity of powder necessary to fire the myriad salutes.This book provides a rare insight into life aboard ship in the mid-1800's as well as the momentous opening of Japan (by force and intimidation I might add - sort of a velvet-covered hammer) to the outside world. This is a must-read for all Nipponphiles and readers interested in how our relationship with Japan began.

Amazing insight in our American History.

I was not aware of the event prior to reading the book and was taken by the ability of William Speiden, Jr. (18 years old) recording of history. The book covers more that the event and reveals much about the life of a person in the Navy during that time.

A little dry, but vastly interesting

This book takes the view of William Speiden Jr., a member of Perry's tour to Japan. The book is really interesting and gives a great perspective about the role of the Navy in the 19th Century. Also, some of the sketches done by Speiden and his friends are very impressive. All in all, this book is good, but a little dry.

About the Author

�����Forrest W. Parkay�is Professor of Educational Leadership and Higher Education at Washington State University. He was Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Florida for eight years and at Texas State University for five years. Forrest received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in English education from the University of Illinois-Urbana. He earned his Ph.D. in education at the University of Chicago, and he is a graduate of Harvard University’s Management Development Program (MDP). For eight years, Forrest taught at DuSable High School on Chicago’s South Side, and he served as Chairman of DuSable’s English Department for four years.

�����Forrest is the author or co-author of more than 60 refereed journal articles and several books, including�Becoming a Teacher�(Pearson, 2013). One of the best textbooks I've had so far. I love how each chapter has a variety of articles on different subjects mentioned in each chapter. You can read about different perspectives and views on issues regarding curriculum development. I don't usually enjoy my school textbooks but this one is well written and very beneficial to educators.

Another strong OCP exam guide from Oracle Press

Last year I used Oracle Press's OCP Developer exam guide to prepare for, and pass, the Developer/2000 exams. The book worked great. Now I need to apply my Forms knowledge to creating custom Financials screens, so I bought this book. Its excellent. It gives the underlying logic behind Financials, and then goes into screen-by-screen detail. Very helpful. After buying this book and starting to read it, I've rescheduled my first Apps exam from a month away to next week!

Great reading

A terrific thriller, Ludlum in top form. This is back in the days when his intricate plots made sense and fit like a glove. He also kept the page count down in this one, never padding the book, and never veering into unnecessary sidetracks (like ICARUS AGENDA's 100+ page prologue!)
I can't see a thriller fan not loving this book, nor failing to appreciate the brilliant device Ludlum uses to get the action going. If you've never read Ludlum, this is a great place to start.

The best by the best

The Chancellor Manuscript by Robert Ludlum is a first rate book by the number one Thriller writer in my opinion. Buy it, I believe you will enjoy it.
The plot is about a famous writer, Peter Chancellor, who has been given the task of writing a novel by a group called the Inver Brass, a sinister group with an ulterior motive of finding out who among them is a traitor. The topic of the novel must be the assassination of J. Edger Hoover. When the author comes too close to exposing the existence and identities of the group and its members they try to discredit him and his work. They try to drive him crazy by turning everything he writes as fiction into reality. Not only that but the villains that he has created are actually trying to kill him. Meanwhile the Inver Brass are trying to convince him he is delusional.
It is the reader in the end who must decide what is fiction and what is real as the novel works its way through twists and turns in the wonderful way only a Ludlum novel can produce. It the end all comes together rather nicely.
His characters are as usual, both realistic and developed. The writing is superb. The suspense nail biting. It is simply the best by the best.

Robert Ludlum -- Master of the Espionage Novel

I am hooked on Robert Ludlum's books. I gave up romance after I turned 20, moved on to murder mysteries (Ellery Queen genre), but I never experienced an author that could keep me awake until 3:00 in the morning, not only with this book--but with all of them!
I have read The Chancellor Manuscripts, all three of the series of the Bourne books, and just finished the Holcroft Covenant, which teases and hints at a sequel in the last few pages, and I'm crossing my fingers there is one (have to still check out his list of books).
The twist, as expected in any Ludlum novel, occurs about half-way through the book, from a direction the reader would never guess, and involves a woman (the hero always has to get his gal in Ludlum's novels!), and this right after he experiences something that forces him to run for his life, hide from those he loves, and/or forces him to cut his communications from any normal life that the hero would normally use if this was real life.
While Ludlum's books smack of a 'formula,' I'm hooked--you know that something unusual is going to happen to the main character, he's going to be forced to give up his normal life to go out and 'save the world,' he'll use life-long aquaintances for help throughout the book (although about 85% end up in a morgue by the end of the story), there's lots of shooting of the bad guys, a damsel in distress who will initially hate or distrust the main character, then fall in love with him, and after which everybody shoots at each other and more bad and good guys die, then the hero either ends up being 'savior' of the world, or he ends up chopped to pieces (ouch), but survives to take on the bad guys again.
Don't try this plot at home--only Ludlum can add enough realistic and believable imagery to convince you of the reality of the story with his details. I was surprised that this is the only book of Ludlum's so far to have the scenery completely fall within the continental USA versus his European settings for all his other books. While the details are pretty amibiguous in this book, they are realistic enough to give you a feel for the location (versus his precise details and descriptions of European sites in his other novels).
If you haven't tried a Ludlum novel, pick one up--any one, and enjoy an espionage thriller that only a master like Ludlum can write.

Originally published by Van Nostrand Reinhold in 1984, this revised edition provides for the self-teaching of four italic scripts. The first three--basic italic, formal italic, and chancery italic--are fairly standard calligraphy forms. The fourth style, cursive italic, is designed for use as everyday handwriting. Presented in the authors' previous books, the eight-volume Italic Handwriting Series (Continuing Education Pr., 1986), and Write Now ( LJ 3/1/91), this style was devised to facilitate the transition from printing to cursive writing. The format of this book, with practice space directly below the calligraphic examples (and instructions to use tracing paper), make comparison and correction easy. Recommended for public libraries.

About the Author
Barbara Getty, MAT, has taught calligraphy and handwriting for over 25 years, and elementary school for 14 years. She has been an instructor at Lewis and Clark College, Portland Community College and Portland State University (in Portland, Oregon), currently conducts workshops on calligraphy and italic handwriting, and was featured on CNN. She studied with Lloyd Reynolds and Jacqueline Svaren. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and published in International Calligraphy Today. She is a graduate of Lewis and Clark College, did postgraduate work at Portland State University, receiving her MAT from Lewis and Clark College.

Inga Dubay, BA, has taught calligraphy at the Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland, Oregon, since 1975, and was Book Arts Department Head for six years. She also taught at Portland State University and has conducted numerous calligraphy and handwriting workshops across the country including several International Calligraphy Conferences. She studied at Mills College, received her degree from the University of Oregon, and did post-graduate work at the Art Academy in Oslo, Norway, the University of Oregon, and the University of California, Berkeley. She studied calligraphy with Lloyd Reynolds and Lois McClelland. Her work has been shown in national and international juried and invitational exhibitions, and has been published in Calligraphy Review, Martha Stewart Living and Lettering Arts.

Both authors travel all over the country giving seminars to physicians and medical professionals on how to write legibly.

Beautiful style and easy to follow

This year I felt compelled to improve my penmanship, and originally found this book at the public library. What initially drew me to this book is that it taught "chancery italic" which is a style of lettering that I admired. James Pickering at "The Fountain Pen Network" has beautiful penmanship, and champions Chancery Italic and Chancery Cursive. His penmanship is beautiful, and I encourage you to perform an image search for some of his work.

This book teaches several italic families of letters: Basic Italic, Formal Italic, Chancery Italic, Cursive Italic, and some variations. The entire book is handwritten in the example lettering that the authors teach. The authors explain posture, paper position, the origins of calligraphy, fountain pens, and other topics related to penmanship. They also explain why many Americans have terrible handwriting. Their explanation fit my personal experience, and clarified why my penmanship was so bad.

To improve my penmanship, I practiced about 15 minutes per day for a couple of weeks, and saw dramatic improvement. To practice, I purchased a Canson Pro Layout Marker Pad (very nice tracing paper) and then traced the letters for 10-15 minutes. It was that easy. An example of my Basic Italic handwriting is attached. This book gave me the results I was seeking.

Italic Handwriting

I wish I had found this book 40 years ago. Well it wasn't published 40 years ago, but you get the idea. My handwriting had gotten to the point that even I could not read it. I decided to take up Italic handwriting and purchased this book. I realize now that it is a classic. All I know is that it has really helped me write better. I would strongly suggest that all parents purchase this book and have their children start to learn italic handwriting. They will be glad they did.

Easy to Follow and Learn

This book is great for improving handwriting and learning calligraphy for any age. This style conforms to the natural movements of the hands and is easy to learn. The authors instruction and letter development are based on research and can help even those who have found writing challenging!
